How to use what you hate and dislike to uncover your passions

Have you ever just felt lost? Like, you don’t know what to do or what exactly you’re passionate about..

I think many of us have been there before, a lot of us may still be there, but I’ve figured out a secret.  I bet you can tell me all about the things that you don’t like and what grinds your gears, if asked. And I bet that the conversation will have so much passion in the form of frustration as you explain.

See, I realized I may not always know what I want, but I always know what I don’t want. And that can catapult you into your dreams, desires and passions. I have personally tried so many different hobbies and careers thinking “this is what I want to do”, only to realize I hate it or that it’s just completely boring.

So, one day I said to myself, exhausted from all of these random hobbies and skills I’ve acquired, “Self, what do you want?”. And the only answer I could come up with was money, which wasn’t a lot of help. I’ve used that approach before and researched highest paying jobs that I completely had zero interest in.  So, I asked myself, “what don’t you want?” And that’s where the magic began.

I started listing all types of things.

  • I don’t want to work a 9 to 5
  • I don’t want to get up early
  • I don’t want to deal with kids
  • I don’t want to diet
  • Etc., etc., etc.

The list was LONG! But, then I followed that question up with, “what bothers you the most about your life and the world around you?” That answer was very personal because I realized that the things that bothered me the most about the world around me was kind of a reflection about what bothered me most about myself. The answer to that question helped me understand my weaknesses and the bad habits that led me to where I was in life. It made want to take accountability and action to change the things that bothered me the most.  It birthed my passions and my purpose. It awakened a beast.

So, I challenge you. If you don’t know what you want to do in this life or you’re working a job that doesn’t satisfy you; ask yourself these 2 questions:

  1. What don’t I like?
  2. What bothers me the most about my life and the world around me?

Then take those answers and become conscious of the things that you are doing that you don’t like to do and the things you would change in the world if you could. Now, I don’t know if you’ll have the same experience as me, but I can guarantee that it will open your eyes to more self-awareness and may birth a hidden passion or two.
